Artist’s Statement
I have worked in ceramics for fifteen years. My
fascination with clay has led me to gain the technical knowledge necessary to
successfully express my ideas. Playing in the dirt is always a stimulating
challenge. I have had the wonderful opportunity of working
with two very talented artist and teachers. Andy Nasisse and Ted Saupe. They
have both taught me about intriguing historical pottery cultures and
essential techniques while inspiring experimentation, intuitive play and
self-exploration/expression. Most importantly they have encouraged me to
think of myself as an artist. I have also had the honor of taking a workshop
with Nancy Blum, another brilliant ceramic artist. During one of her lectures
she read: “ A person who works with their hands is a laborer. A person who
works with hands and their heart is a craftsman. A person that works with
their hands, their heart and their mind is an artist.” I am
dedicated and indebted to clay. I am very fortunate to have found such a
dynamic medium to channel through and share with others. My work takes many
forms from cups, bowls, platters and bottles to more sculptural jars, vases,
masks and sconces. The carving is organic, abstract and often reveals an
angelic female figure swirling around the form as well as words streaming
from my hands. The
latest adventure has been working with many talented legends in the business,
such as, Barbara & Paul Bendzunas, Kathy & Jerry Chappelle, Camille
& Bill Ronay, Jan Whyllson from Genuine Georgia Greensboro, Chuck Jones
with the RAC 5 Tourism Committee/Athens CVB and many others in the arts in
our region, along with Chris McGahee from the NEGRDC and Mayor Jim Luken of Watkinsville
on forming the Arts Development Council of Georgia to recognize and enhance
the economic development impact and potential of the arts on tourism in the
state of Georgia. The State of Georgia Department of Economic Development
Tourism Division has also been very supportive and interested in this
pursuit. My
husband Shannon and I live in Comer, Georgia with our 10 year old twins,
Paxton and Sebastian. Our studio is located in the “Old Blue Bell Building”.
Its 12,000 square feet have lived many different lives over the past 108
years and has undergone many exciting changes. It is now our home, gallery
and studio and three other retail businesses.
